Spam 'n' Beans

I just. I will never understand '40s ads.

I was sitting in Study Hall (free period) the other day, and I turn around to look behind me and there's just this shelf. And on that shelf was a pile of National Geographic. Normally I'd be all like, "Oh yeah that's cool whatever," but I thought the font on the side of the spines looked a little off. So I grabbed one off the top of the pile and it turns out that it was from 1947. I kind of died a little, because reading old first-edition books or papers or magazines from the earlier half of the 20th century or sooner is one of the little-known things that absolutely makes my day.

So I kind of had to hold in my fangirling as I flipped through it. It had very little color and was reminiscent of a newspaper, so I kind of skimmed everything because my attention span is pathetic. Then when I closed it, I almost died when I saw the ad that was on the back. Seriously, who was in charge of campaigning ads back then.

Does this even look remotely appetizing?
I didn't think so.

...no but seriously can somebody please explain to me what the fuck that's supposed to be. Is that like canned ham or something.
